The art of listening in a relationship: Why genuine listening is the key to mutual understanding and emotional connection

November 11, 2024

True listening – what is it and why is it rare?

Listening is an essential part of all interpersonal communication, yet דווקא in relationships – the place where we most need healthy and loving communication – it is sometimes absent or exists only on a superficial level. Contrary to common belief, true listening is not just waiting for your turn to speak or hearing the words that are said. Rather, it is the ability to notice the emotions behind the words, to give your partner a sense that they are understood and accepted, and to strengthen the relationship through genuine attention and care. Quality listening is considered today one of the more complex skills, one that requires practice and a willingness to engage in a process with your partner.

Despite good intentions, true listening can be challenging due to emotional and cultural barriers. Here are some common obstacles:

  1. Automatic reactions and response patterns – when a partner speaks, we sometimes tend to respond automatically or activate pre-prepared response patterns. Often, we are busy thinking about our response or waiting for the opportunity to reply, instead of listening fully.
  2. Judgment and preconceived notions – one of the biggest problems in communication is the inability to set aside judgment and prior assumptions. When we listen מתוך a sense that we already know what the other is going to say, we block the possibility of a fresh experience of understanding their words and intentions.
  3. Feelings of overload and mental stress – many couples find it difficult to listen when they feel emotional overload or external pressure. In such situations, the ability to be emotionally attentive decreases significantly, and they tend to assign less importance to what the partner is trying to share.
  4. Self-defense and the desire to be “right” – often when conflict arises, listening breaks down due to a desire to defend our position. Instead of trying to understand the other side, we invest energy in proving that we are right, and in doing so lose the genuine connection.

The power of listening in emotional depth and intimate connection

When couples practice true listening, they discover that their relationship changes on a deep level. Connecting listening creates a sense of mutual trust, reduces anger, and prevents accumulated frustration. Good listening allows each partner to feel that they can share their inner world and know that their partner will be there to receive and understand their experiences, even if they differ from their own perspective.

True listening not only reduces tension, but also allows partners to grow מתוך their differences. When they truly listen to one another, they gain an opportunity to draw inspiration, learn from each other, and enrich their shared lives.

Practical techniques for effective listening

  1. Focus on your partner – during a meaningful conversation, it is important to put the phone aside, stop any other activity, and give full attention to your partner. Body language should convey availability and openness.
  2. Emotional reflection – when a partner shares feelings or thoughts, it is important to try to reflect their feelings in words (“you feel that…”), rather than responding immediately. This helps show the partner that their message was received and that you are truly with them.
  3. Open and curious questions – asking questions that invite elaboration on feelings and emotions, rather than short answers that signal lack of importance or impatience. Questions such as “what exactly did you feel?” or “how did it affect you?” show genuine interest in the conversation.
  4. Pausing and breathing before responding – moments of silence after your partner has finished speaking allow us to process what was said and respond in a more thoughtful and calm way, and also show respect and weight to their words.
  5. Relating to the intention behind the words – instead of focusing on the exact words or tone used, try to understand the emotional intention behind them, and receive them with empathy and care.

The art of listening as a foundation for a loving and stable relationship

True listening is a skill that strengthens and reinforces the foundation of every relationship. The ability to set ourselves aside for a moment and fully engage in listening allows couples to build a more stable and loving relationship, and to feel that each of them is valued and heard. In an age filled with distractions, listening is a precious gift for a relationship, because when we learn to truly listen, we not only support our partner but also give ourselves and our relationship space for growth, understanding, and deepening of the intimate connection.
